Andrew grew up in the former city of Dartmouth where he now lives with his wife Katia and son Declan. Andrew holds a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology and Political Science from Dalhousie University, and a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of King's College.
Andrew was first elected to the legislature in 2009 after a five year career on Halifax Regional Council. He was first elected to council in 2004 representing East Dartmouth - The Lakes, and was re-elected by acclamation in 2008.
As Liberal critic for both Energy and Environment, Andrew has been heavily involved in working on energy and environmental issues across the province, proudly believing in Nova Scotia’s potential to be a world leader in green technology. As Chair of HRM's Energy Committee, Andrew played a key role in the development and analysis of energy policy, and oversaw the progress of a number of district, geothermal, and alternative energy projects. Andrew is a passionate advocate for renewable energy solutions and working toward creating a more self-sustaining Nova Scotia.
Andrew is known for his volunteer work as an active member of the Parker Street Food and Furniture Bank, the Maritime Fiddling Festival Committee, the Brookhouse Elementary School Advisory Committee and the Michael Wallace Community Playground committee. Andrew has also served as a member of the 2008 Jeux de l'Acadie planning committee and the Prince Andrew Woodlawn Environmental Enhancement and Conservation Association, among others. In 1992 and 1993 Andrew was awarded the Canadian Merit Scholarship Award for his community service work in Dartmouth.
Prior to his election to Regional Council, Andrew operated a successful small business in the field of television production and communications. As founder and owner of Whalesong Productions, Andrew provided freelance media coverage to print and broadcast organizations around the world, and is particularly known for his coverage and investigative reporting of social justice issues. Andrew also assisted with development projects in West Africa, including a women's micro-credit program in eastern Niger and an AIDS education project in the Gambia. |
