Michel P. Samson is a thirty-six year old native of Petit-de-Grat, Richmond County. Following his graduation from Isle Madame District High School, he attended Dalhousie University where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in history. Michel continued his education at Dalhousie Law School and graduated in May 1997 with a specialization in Marine Law.
After articling with the Halifax law firm of Blois Nickerson & Bryson, Michel was admitted to the Nova Scotia Barrister's Society in November 1998. Michel is currently an associate lawyer with the Strait Area law firm, BoudrotRodgers.
Michel became a member of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party at the age of fourteen. Michel was first elected at age twenty-five, on March 24, 1998, becoming the second youngest representative elected to the House of Assembly. As a member of the Russell MacLellan Liberal government, Michel was appointed, in December 1998, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for the Youth Secretariat, becoming the youngest member called to cabinet in the history of the Province of Nova Scotia.
Michel was re-elected in the provincial elections of 1999, 2003 and 2006. He has served as the Chair of and member for a number of Standing Committees of the House of Assembly. He also served as Leader in the House for the Liberal caucus and as Interim Leader of the Liberal Party from June 2006 to April 2007. Michel recently served as the Chair of the all-party committee on Participation in the Democratic Process, which was created to examine low voter turnout in Nova Scotia provincial elections.
Since elected, Michel has been very active as a French parliamentarian. He acted as an observer for Presidential elections in Senegal, Africa on two occasions. He has also been a presenter at parliamentary seminars in Gabon, Africa and Vanuatu. Michel has attended conferences in Asia, Europe, Africa and Haiti. He was elected to the post of Chargé de Mission for the Région Amérique de l'Assemble Parlementaire Francophone in July 2005 and re-elected in 2007. Michel became the first Nova Scotia MLA to hold this position.
Michel comes from a fishing family and spent most of his summers working in the fishery. He continues to be a strong supporter of local community and economic development organizations. He is the Chair of this year's Codstock festival, held on the Arichat waterfront.
