FUNDING FOR ALL FISHING INDUSTRIES: THERIAULT
Date: Friday July 3, 2009

(Halifax) Liberal fisheries critic Harold (Jr.) Theriault is calling upon the federal and provincial governments to work together to aid all fisheries in Atlantic Canada. In a letter sent today to federal minister Gail Shea, the Digby-Annapolis MLA says that funding for the ailing lobster fishery is welcomed, but other sectors cannot be ignored.

Our long-line ground fishery has been hit particularly hard with this recent economic recession said Theriault. The market for this sector has been in decline for quite some time and due to the unforeseen downturn in the economy, fishers from all industries are facing serious financial situations and severe market conditions.

On June 10th, the federal government announced the long-awaited funding for the lobster fishery. $65 Million dollars will be used for harvesters who have been hurt by the collapse in market demand for lobster caused by the worldwide recession. Theriault agrees that this is much-needed money to the lobster fishery but believes federal and provincial governments are neglecting other industries, such as clamming and halibut fishing. The MLA stressed that the clamming industry in particular has been hit hard due to poor market conditions and has received little help from government.

"There is a lack of focus when it comes to our fishing industry in Canada," Theriault continued. "Funding for the lobster industry is needed, but we cannot stand idly by and forget other fishing sectors. It's time for the federal and provincial governments to step up and ensure the sustainability and revitalization of all fishing industries in Atlantic Canada."
