YOUNGER CONCERNED WITH LITTER NEAR LAKE BANOOK Date: Sunday August 9, 2009
(Halifax, NS) Dartmouth East Liberal MLA Andrew Younger is urging
the provincial government to clean up the large amount of litter
scattered along sections of Highway #111 and #118 before the World Canoe
Championships get underway later this week.
“The sections of highways near the Prince Albert Road are in a
deplorable state and residents of the area are concerned,” explained
Younger. “It’s unsightly and unfair to the community that must deal
with this. The negative environmental impacts are unacceptable.”
Younger believes the litter causes damage to the province’s
reputation with tourists, as well.
“Lake Banook is about to play host to a major international event
with the World Canoe Championships,” says the Liberal MLA. “It's
unfortunate and embarrassing that sponsors, participants, spectators,
and international media attending the canoe championships will see the
mess along these provincial highways within our urban core. This litter
must be removed before the event starts on Wednesday.”
Younger has written a letter to the Minister of Transportation and
Infrastructure Renewal, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Heritage and
the Minister of Environment asking for swift government action to clean
up the area.
“While tourism and special events are important to Nova Scotia, the
maintenance of our roads and highways benefits those who live here
most,” states Younger.
“In the short-term, this matter needs to be rectified prior to the
World Championships. Long-term, residents of the area expect a plan to
be put in place to address this issue on an ongoing basis.”
