LIBERALS: DEXTER MUST PROTECT PROVINCES RESEARCH-IN-MOTION JOBS
Date: Thursday September 3, 2009

(Halifax, NS) Opposition Liberals want to know what Premier Dexter
has done to ensure that the sale of Nortel’s assets to a foreign
company has no impact on Research-in-Motion jobs here in Nova Scotia.

“Has Premier Dexter spoken with Prime Minister Harper about this sale
and how it may affect the 400 RIM employees in our province?” asked
Liberal leader Stephen McNeil. “The sale of Nortel to foreign
interests may very well handicap Research-in-Motion and any plans the
company had to expand their operation here in Nova Scotia.”

Bedford-Birch Cove MLA Kelly Regan, whose riding is home to the RIM
Support Centre, doesn’t believe Nortel’s technologies should be
allowed to fall into the hands of a foreign company such as Ericsson.

“The intellectual property being sold was developed by a Canadian
company using a significant amount of Canadian taxpayers’ dollars,”
said Regan. “It’s simply not in the best interest of our province or
our country to have that same technology used to compete against
Canadian high-tech firms.”

“If jobs are at stake in this province, the premier should be asking
the prime minister to stop the sale.”
