MCNEIL: EQUALITY AND PARITY FOR SOME Date: Friday October 16, 2009
(Halifax, NS) Liberal Leader Stephen McNeil congratulated faculty at
Cape Breton University today on ratifying an agreement with a base wage
increase of 2.9 percent annually, on par with the province’s public
school teachers and faculty at Saint Mary’s University.
"This really brings into focus how the faculty and staff at our
community colleges are being treated unfairly by the Dexter government,"
said McNeil. "Why is this government trying to create two classes of
teachers in this province; those who deserve wage parity and those who
don't?"
The students at Cape Breton University can now continue their studies
with confidence. Meanwhile, the 25,000 students at community colleges
remain in limbo.
"The Dexter government has the ability to prevent this strike. It has
the ability to do so, but not the political will," said McNeil.
