SAMSON SENDS CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY OF MARILYN MACKAY Date: Tuesday October 27, 2009
(Halifax, NS) Marilyn MacKay left her home in Louisdale, Cape Breton
two years ago and headed to Toronto for a double lung transplant surgery
that took place on October 20, 2009. Sadly, Ms. McKay passed away just
six days after the 11-hour surgery, leaving behind her family, numerous
friends and many followers of her brave story, including Richmond MLA
Michel Samson.
Mr. Samson expressed his deepest sympathy to Marilyn’s family and his
admiration for her, as both a friend and her MLA.
"Because Marilyn and Ken shared their story with Nova Scotians
regarding their living expenses while seeking medical treatment not
available in Nova Scotia, Marilyn was able to shed some light on a
health care issue that affects many Nova Scotians,” Samson said.
"The strength, courage and determination shown by Marilyn and Ken will
provide financial help to many Nova Scotia families seeking out-of-
province medical attention in the future."
Mr. Samson said that coverage might not have happened if the MacKay’s
had not spoken publicly about their case. This was an issue the MLA
brought forward in the legislature last year.
Recalling her infectious personality and tenacity, Samson noted how
excited Marilyn and her family were to receive news of the surgery and
how this tragic loss will be felt well beyond her family.
“Her loss is devastating news for her family, friends and everyone
who has followed her story and brave courage," Samson said. “Our
thoughts and prayers are with her husband Ken, her children and her
entire family at this difficult time."
