MCNEIL: TIME TO IMPLEMENT IMMEDIATE CHANGES Date: Tuesday February 23, 2010
(Halifax, NS) Liberal leader Stephen McNeil says now is the time for the three party leaders to work together in a non-partisan way to restore public confidence in their members of the Legislature.
"I know that Darrell Dexter and Karen Casey agree with me that an institution we all cherish has been tarnished," said McNeil. "I believe it is important that the three leaders agree to make some immediate changes to MLA expenses and allowances now, prior to the house sitting and prior to Art Donahue reporting back to the Speaker."
On February 11th, McNeil requested a meeting with the two party leaders and the Speaker of the House. That meeting is scheduled to take place today. McNeil has already indicated he agrees with the Premier's proposal of an all-party committee which would operate in public. In addition, McNeil proposes posting MLA expenses on-line.
"It is important that the dignity of the institution we serve be maintained," said McNeil. "I believe as leaders, we can agree in a non-partisan way to make immediate changes which would help restore public confidence."
