Liberal Bill Would Help Close Gender Pay Gap
October 27, 2023 – (Halifax, NS)
A Liberal bill tabled today would require employers in both the public and private sector to include wage or salary ranges on all publicly advertised jobs.
Deputy Leader Kelly Regan will table the Pay Equity and Pay Transparency Act as an effort to further reduce barriers to employment and wage gaps, particularly for women, BIPOC, 2SLGBTQQIA+ and differently abled persons. For both the public and private sector, this bill would require salary ranges to be advertised on job postings and would prohibit employers from requesting pay history information from job applicants – a discriminatory practice that is known to contribute to the gender pay gap.
Similar legislation has been passed in Newfoundland and Labrador.
“Being transparent about the wages an employer pays is an important step in closing the gender pay gap in Nova Scotia,” said Regan. “The Houston government can show their commitment to diversifying Nova Scotia’s workforce by passing pay transparency legislation today.”
