Iain grew up in Timberlea, and is formally from Mabou, Cape Breton. He has volunteered in various capacities throughout his career and gained private sector experience in a number of provinces working as an Operations Manager and Business Analyst. He was first elected as the MLA for Timberlea-Prospect in 2013, and became the Government Caucus Chair for the Nova Scotia Liberal Party in 2015.

Iain holds a Golf Club Management Diploma from Holland College, a Bachelor of Business Administration from Mount Saint Vincent University, and a Master of Arts in International Politics organized by the Centre Européen Recherches Internationales Stratégiques (CERIS) in partnership with the College d’Etudes Interdisciplinaires of the Université Paris Sud-11. Iain’s previous work experience has included General Manager, and later as Director of Operations of a large commercial development company in Ottawa. In 2012, Iain successfully worked with local entrepreneurs to launch Premiere Self Storage in Burnside Business Park. He went on to work with special projects for a Halifax based development company. While in Ottawa, Iain volunteered with several organization including the Furniture Bank of Ottawa, and he helped transform it to the Matthew House Refugee Shelter. Before serving Timberlea-Prospect as their MLA, Iain volunteered with numerous boards including: the Community Monitoring Committee; the Resource Opportunities Centre; and Five Bridges Wilderness Heritage Trust. Iain serves as President of the Nova Scotia section of the Assemblée Parlementaire de la Francophonie (APF), he is the Vice Chair of the Public Accounts Committee, and is also member of the Assembly Matters Committee, Private and Local Bills Committee and the House of Assembly Management Commission.
